With the COVID-19 situation continuing to advance and evolve, we wanted to give an update about measures that we’re taking to ensure the health and well-being of Pixie’s people and animals.

We are monitoring updates and recommendations from the CDC, WHO, and local authorities and are prepared to enact changes to our operations as necessary. For the time being, the shelter is operating normally. Should we decide to close the shelter to the public, rest assured that all animals in our care will continue to have their needs met by shelter staff and foster caregivers. In addition to our standard hygiene and daily sanitization measures, we are sanitizing doorknobs and other surfaces in our facility that are frequently touched.

Staff and volunteers have been instructed not to come in if they are feeling ill or know that they have been exposed to COVID-19. We do ask that visitors, volunteers, and potential adopters delay their visit to the shelter if they aren’t feeling well in order to reduce the risk of spreading illness to others.

While current evidence overwhelmingly suggests that companion animals are unlikely to become infected by COVID-19, this is a good opportunity to review your pets’ role in your general disaster preparedness plan. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that pet owners keep on hand the following:
*A two-week supply of food and water for each pet in your care.
*A two-week supply of each pet’s medications.
*A file that contains each pet’s care plan, vaccination and ownership records, microchip information, and a preferred contact in case of emergency.

We hope that all humans and animals in the Pixie community stay safe and healthy during this time, and we will continue to provide updates as the situation develops.
