Thank you for your interest in fostering a Pixie Pet! Fostering a pet is a deeply rewarding experience and it is one of the most direct ways to make a lasting difference in the lives of animals. The reasons that a particular animal may need foster care vary greatly. Some just need a quiet and peaceful place to recover from a spay or neuter surgery, some may be overwhelmed or scared by a shelter environment and others may be in need of additional medical or behavioral support best found in a home. Whatever the reason, it is important to know that every animal that we can place in foster care opens up a spot in our shelter for another animal awaiting intake. This means that by opening up your home to a foster pet in need you not only that help that animal but others not yet in the safety of our adoption program.
The Pixie Project staff will always do our best to match the right foster animal with the right foster home. In order for us to do this successfully it is important that we have all the necessary information regarding your home and family. Please consider the following questions when filling out our foster application:
1) Are all members of your home in agreement about the decision to foster a pet? This includes housemates, spouses, family members and anyone else who would share responsibility or interaction with the animal in your home.
2) How will your current pets react to a new pet entering the home? A normal adjustment period is always expected but we never want the addition of a foster animal to cause extreme stress or unhappiness on a resident pet.
3) Do you have the time? While many Pixie foster pets may be older, totally trained and require little more than a cozy place to await their new forever home, others might have medical or training needs that require a bit more time and energy on the part of the foster home. It is very important to clearly and honestly communicate your schedule, comfort level, and realistic expectations of what time and energy you have to offer a foster animal. This will help us to ensure your foster experience is rewarding and enjoyable!
Once you have considered the questions above the next step is to fill our foster parent application. If you are considering fostering either a dog or a cat please fill out both forms as each animal has a specific set of needs.
When the application has been completed submit it to the Pixie Project either via email, fax, or in person at which point we will schedule a meeting for you and one of our staff members to get acquainted, and hopefully get you ready for a foster pet.
