Happy Mother's Day!
In honor of Mother’s Day, we wanted to celebrate the countless mothers we have paired with their dog and cat children here at the Pixie Project. Congratulations! For those of you thinking about adoption, here's a top ten list for you to consider this Mother’s Day. The Top Ten Reasons Why Pet Motherhood Is Better Than Regular Motherhood: 1. You will never have to deal with awkward and embarrassing tantrums. In line at the grocery store. 2. Even ugly dogs are cute. Think Pugs. 3. No one looks at you like you're crazy if your dog is on a leash. 4. Pets don’t require strollers, cribs and car seats. Cha-Ching. 5. You will never be tempted to snack on your pet's food. Hopefully. 6. You will never have to explain why the sky is blue. Hopefully. 7. Your fridge will live a life free of glitter-covered popsicle stick picture frames. 8. You don’t have to worry about your pet watching too much TV. 9. No teenage rebellion. Your pet will never been embarrassed to be seen with you and will never ask to borrow your car. 10. No college tuition. Double-Cha-Ching. All joking aside, we hope that this Mother’s Day finds both our pet mothers and real mothers with warm spirits and loving reciprocity. For anyone considering the joys of pet motherhood, we encourage you to come into the store and talk to our devoted animal adoption team about starting your own little family or fostering some wonderful furry kiddos. Thank you for your support and have a happy Mother’s Day! Hot Off the Press: Pet-Related News of the Week

On April 30, the national pet magazine Tails began to promote its “Letters for Pets” campaign to convince President Obama to establish a national Adopt-a-Shelter-Pet day! Pet lovers are urged to download, complete and send in a letter from the campaign website to a member of the Obama family. Help the campaign reach its goal of sending 1 million letters to the White House! As an added bonus, for each letter sent, the holistic pet care organization Halo will donate five meals to shelter pets! Check out this article from The Oregonian to learn more.
Also on April 30, the US Postal Service released its latest social awareness stamp, Animal Rescue: Adopt a Shelter Pet. The stamps, created as part of the “Stamps to the Rescue” campaign, feature photographs of 10 cats and dogs from animal shelters and rescue groups. The campaign was created by Ellen DeGeneres, Halo (a holistic pet care organization co-owned by DeGeneres), and the US Postal Service. Halo will use the money raised from the stamps to provide one million meals to shelter pets across the country. Check out http://www.stampstotherescue.com or http://www.usps.com to learn more!
An Afternoon Out with Zelda and McDuff: Volunteering for the First Time at the Pixie ProjectIn many ways, volunteering at the Pixie Project is like a nerve-wracking blind date. Suddenly you’re handed a leash and a doo-doo bag and your first thought is, “is this dog even going to like me?” This thought is accompanied by all of the usual insecurities: Are you talking too much? Too little? Is he going to like this walk? Does his breath smell? And, most importantly, how fast does this dog want to go?
Last week, Carrie, Bryan and Kinsley volunteered to walk Zelda and McDuff across the Steel Bridge and down by the waterfront. The sky was clear, the sun was shining and the two pups couldn’t be happier. While Zelda was a little bit timid, especially around passing bicyclists, McDuff was always in the lead, anxious and excited to explore. It was great for both dogs to get the chance to stretch their legs, and for the volunteers to get a few sloppy kisses!
Volunteering at the Pixie Project is fun, easy and rewarding. Walking dogs is a great incentive to get a little exercise and enjoy fantastic views of the city we call home. And if you’re not ready for the responsibility of owning your own pet, volunteering gives you the opportunity to play with a fuzzy creature of your own – at least for an afternoon.
Hot off the Press: Pet-Related News of the WeekCharles the tabby cat disappeared eight months ago from his home in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Last week, Chicago Animal Care and Control picked him up as a stray! No one knows how the cat traveled more than 1,300 miles, but he was identified by a microchip implanted between his shoulders. Another reason to make sure you get your pets microchipped! Read this Associated Press article to learn more!
The American Pet Product Association (APPA) recently announced the winners of its second annual National Children’s Pet Poetry Contest.
